Being "Vulnerable" on LinkedIn


Hi Reader,

Being a personal branding agency, one of the biggest questions we discuss with our clients is "How vulnerable should you be on LinkedIn?"

It's true - you should show the "real you" & people do connect with honesty. But we have a strict no-no against religion, politics or anything "personal" - like divorces, family crisis etc.

People mix two very different ideas: personal and private.

Personal builds connection. Private creates discomfort.

Personal is saying, “I struggled with imposter syndrome early in my career, and here’s what helped.” Private is asking thousands of strangers to emotionally process your pain in real time.

The difference isn’t the topic. It’s the intent.

When you share something personal, you’re offering perspective. When you share something private, you’re seeking validation.

One creates trust. The other silently demands emotional labour from your audience.

And this is where most professionals get stuck. They have meaningful experiences. Burnout. Failure. Reinvention. Loss. But they don’t know how to talk about them without feeling exposed, performative, or worse, exploitative.

So they swing to extremes. Either they post sanitized, generic advice that sounds safe but forgettable. Or they overshare, hoping vulnerability alone will do the heavy lifting.

Neither works. Because the real value isn’t the experience. It’s the extraction.

Your personal crisis isn’t content. But the clarity it gave you about priorities, people, or purpose might be exactly what someone else needs.

The lesson lives inside the story. Not on the surface of it.

The best professional content doesn’t make people say, “Wow, that was intense.” It makes them say, “That changed how I think.”

That’s where credibility compounds.
